First Legislative Assembly Election of Fatehabad was a
controversial election
Fatehabad has faced 17 legislative assembly elections
since freedom of India.
First MLA elections took place in 1952, which got
cancelled twice by the directions of High Court. At that time there were two
seats for MLA in this region. One was General and other was reserved. Ch. Ganga
Ram Gillan Khera contested for general seat and Ch. Dalbir Singh contested for
reserved seat from congress. Both of them defeated their opponents Sh. Maniram
Baghri and Sh. Chhabildaas. But this election was declared unconstitutional.
Second election took place in 1953. This time Sh. Maniram
Baghri and Ch. Baluram of socialist party got victory over Ch. Ganga Ram and Ch.
Dalbir Singh of congress. This election of Maniram Baghri from general category
was also declared unconstitutional. Moreover, election of Sh. Baluram from
reserved seat was declared valid. That's how Sh. Baluram got the privilege to be
the first MLA of Fatehabad.
In 1955 by-election for general category took place and Sh.
Maniram Godara won it. Next elections happened in 1957 and this time this seat
got reserved for general category.

Ch. Devilal contested as an Independent candidate
In 1957 Sh. Maniram Godara (congress) once again won and
became MLA.
After 5 years, for the third legislative assembly, in
1962, Ch. Devi Lal (ex. deputy prime minister) and Sh. Maniram Godara both were
strong leaders and both were expecting ticket from congress. When congress
gave ticket to Sh. Maniram Godara then Ch. Devilal fought the election as an
independent candidate and won.

Influence of Janta Party
Congress won thrice from 1967 to 1972 but in 1977 Janta
Party's influence was more than Congress party. This made Congress candidates
stay away from elections in all the four territories Fatehabad, Bhattu, Ratia,
Tohana. in 1977, Sh. Harphool Singh of Janta Party won over Ch. Lila Krishan,
Harminder Singh, Sh. Prithvi Singh Maanju, Sh. Tekchand Gorakhpuria. In 1977 Ch.
Devi Lal , Janta Party became chief minister of Haryana.
In 1982, Sh. Govindrai
Batra , Congress won over Sh. Harphool Sigh of Janta Party and Sh. Harminder Singh
of Lok Dal.

Ch. Lila Krishan became tourism minister of Haryana
Due to sudden demise of Sh. Govindrai Batra in 1983,
by-election took place and Ch. Lila Krishan who had contested four times earlier
won the election and became MLA.
In 1987, Bhartiya Janta Party and Lokdal's joint candidate
Ch. Balbir Singh won over MACPA's Sh. Prithvi SIngh Gorakhpuria.
In 1991, Congress candidate Ch. Lila Krishan was
re-elected and he got privilege to become Tourism Minister of the Haryana state.
In 1996, Haryana Vikas Party candidate Sardar Harminder
Singh won and Haryana Vikar Party Supreme Ch. Bansilal became chief minister of
Haryana. Ch. Bansilal's "prohibition on wine" during his tenure is considered a
great milestone of that time. Sardar Harminder Singh won over Sh. Sharad Batra
of Indian National Lok Dal. Unfortunately, he passed away next year(1997) and
by-election took place.

Seventh by-election took place after Ch. Lila Krishan's
demise
In 1997, Sh. Sampat Singh of Indain National Lok dal gave
defeat to widow of Sardar Harminder Singh Smt. Jarnail Kaur(Haryana Vikas
Party). This happened because Haryana Vikas Party was facing bad popularity
because of "prohibition on wine", which although was a great effort by
govt. yet was a massive failure.
In 2000, assembly was dissolved so by-election happened.
This time Indian National Lok dal's Ch. Lila Krishan defeated Congress candidate
Sh. Jai Narayan Verma with great margin.
In 2003, Ch. Lila Krishan passed away and re-election took
place. This time Smt. Sawtantra Chowdhary daughter-in-law of Ch. Lila Krishan
won over Congress's Ch. Dura Ram.
